what I’m reading: the last watch by j.s. dewes.

The Divide sits at the edge of the universe, beyond which nothing exists. The Argus, a run-down spaceship, is stationed at the edge of the Divide to keep watch. Commanded by Adequin Rake, it is filled with soldiers who have been exiled and court-martialed. But now, the Divide has begun to collapse, destroying anything and anybody with it. The ragtag crew of the Argus may be the only people in the universe who can stop the Divide from collapsing.

The story is told from two points of view: Adequin, commander of the Argus, and Cavalon, an outcasted royal heir. I really liked the character of Adequin. She reminded me of Emily Blunt’s character in the movie Edge of Tomorrow – she’s a kick-ass soldier who has the respect of everyone around her. She’s multi-faceted and while she has a lot of strengths, she is still flawed.

On the other hand, Cavalon is not your typical hero character and I’m not sure that I would consider him a hero. He’s been disowned by his family and sent to the Argus as punishment. He is definitely not a soldier and while he has a lot of smarts due to a lot of schooling, he has never been in a situation where he has to fight for his life, until now.

This book is fast-paced with lots of action and the story gets more compelling as it goes on and more information is revealed. The book is almost 500 pages but it doesn’t seem like it. The story takes place over 1000 years in the future after a devastating war with aliens who were defeated and never heard from again. The Argus, as well as other ships, patrol the Divide to make sure those aliens have not returned. There is some science and space talk but the novel is not saturated with it and I found it easy to read and follow what was going on.

The Last Watch is the debut novel from J.S. Dewes. I thought this was a great debut and I’ve already preordered the sequel.
